Green Ice Cubes, Freezing Your Kale

img_4241

Kale is so easy to grow and it has many uses and I love the taste of it. The only problem is that there is so much of it that comes ready at once. Our main use of kale in our house is adding it to smoothies, so I wanted to figure out a good way to preserve and freeze our kale so that it was easy to pop in a smoothie. The second way I use all the kale is kale chips. Ill make a post about those too in another post too!

I have had many ask me well how do you freeze all that kale those bags of leaves just take up so much room!! Alas there is a much more efficient way to do this!

After you harvest your kale or have picked up your kale from the market all you have to do is set up a blanching station its really easy, you can do this in just a quick couple of steps!! You can do this with many greens as well, spinach, kale, Swiss card you name it.

Things you will need are:

  • big bowl of ice water
  • water
  • ice cube trays
  • tongs
  • Greens of choice ie Kale
  • A large pot

Directions

  • First off your going to want to wash all your kale and rip the leafs from the stem because the stem is what give the kale the bitter taste so we want to rip that off its super easy to do this just pull from the bottom of the stem downward.

  • Get a large pot boiling on the stove

  • now you can either rip the leaves into small chunks or leave the leaves large. It depends on what you are using it for if you are using it in a smoothie you can keep them larger but if you are wanting to put in a stir fry or in your eggs etc. you might want to rip into smaller pieces

  • once the water has started to boil add kale to water and let sit for 2 mins,
  • now you can use tongs and pick kale out of pot
  • place kale in ice bath for 2 mins, this stops the cooking process. (pretend there is an ice bath here as I forgot to take this picture)

  • now with your tongs again place the kale in ice cube tray and pack it down hard you can really get a lot in there. Its ok if there is water in there because we are making ice cubes and the water is full of the kale nutrients

  • now fill up the whole ice cube tray up with the remaining kale
  • place in freezer for approximately 4 hours or till completely frozen.
  • pop out green cubes and pop them into a large freezer bag
  • you now have green ice cubes ready for smoothies or for what ever your heart desires.
